How to date a garment
Single stitch
Look at the hem of a t-shirt's sleeve and bottom. One line of stitching rather than two is the fastest age signal in vintage clothing. The US industry moved to double-needle hemming through the mid-1990s, so single stitch generally places a shirt before roughly 1996.

Made in USA

Union labels

RN numbers
An RN (Registered Identification Number) identifies the company responsible for the garment. RNs were issued sequentially, so a low RN indicates an older registration. It dates the company registration rather than the garment, so treat it as supporting evidence rather than proof — but combined with a single stitch and a union label it is persuasive.
Care tags and logos
Care symbol styles changed over time, and brand logos changed more often still.
