Selling clothes on eBay in 2026: fees, the tax trap, and a worked profit example

7 min read
Title card reading “Selling on eBay” with the headline fee figures for US clothing sellers.

eBay charges US clothing sellers a 13.6% final value fee on the total amount of the sale — item price, buyer-paid shipping and sales tax — plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). Sneakers over $150 are 8% with no per-order fee. The first 250 listings a month have no insertion fee.

Short answer: eBay charges US clothing sellers a 13.6% final value fee on the total amount of the sale — item price, buyer-paid shipping and sales tax — plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 when the order is $10 or less). Sneakers over $150 drop to 8% with no per-order fee. Your first 250 listings each month carry no insertion fee.

eBay is the marketplace resellers love to complain about and keep coming back to. The fee is not the lowest in resale, but eBay has something the others do not: buyers searching for a specific brand, model or size. That search intent is why the same fleece often sells for more there.

This page covers how eBay’s fees actually land on a clothing sale. For the cross-marketplace table, see Reseller fees explained.

eBay’s fees for clothing sellers

From eBay’s Selling fees page, checked 13 September 2026, for a seller without an eBay Store:

What Rate Notes
Insertion fee $0 for the first 250 listings a month, then $0.35 Most categories
Final value fee, most categories 13.6% up to $7,500, then 2.35% on the portion above Calculated per item
Per-order fee $0.30 (order ≤ $10) or $0.40 (order > $10) Charged once per order
Women’s bags & handbags 15% up to $2,000, then 9% Category exception
Sneakers over $150 8%, no per-order fee From eBay Seller Center
Payment processing Included No third-party processing fee

The part that catches people: the fee is charged on shipping and tax

eBay’s final value fee is not a percentage of your item price. It is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which eBay defines as the item price, handling charges, shipping collected from the buyer, sales tax and other applicable fees.

In practice, a $60 item with $10 shipping and $5.60 sales tax is charged 13.6% of $75.60, not $60. That is $10.28 instead of $8.16. Budget for it on every order.

There is one exception: if you offer 1-day or international shipping alongside a cheaper domestic option, eBay calculates the fee using the cheapest domestic option you offer.

Worked example: a $60 fleece and a $180 pair of sneakers

Both examples assume the buyer pays shipping that exactly covers your label, and a sales tax figure chosen for illustration. Real tax varies by buyer location.

Fleece Sneakers
Item price $60.00 $180.00
Buyer-paid shipping $10.00 $0.00 (free shipping)
Sales tax (assumed) $5.60 $14.40
Fee rate 13.6% 8%
Final value fee −$10.28 −$15.55
Per-order fee −$0.40 none
Shipping label −$10.00 −$15.00
Cost of goods −$8.00 −$60.00
Net profit $41.32 $89.45

eBay collects and remits the sales tax, so it never reaches you. It still raises the fee.

What tends to do well on eBay

This is practitioner guidance, not eBay data:

  • Anything a buyer would search by name. Brand plus model, style number or line: outdoor shells, workwear, denim with a known fit, designer pieces with a label to photograph.
  • Athletic shoes over $150. The 8% rate with no per-order fee is one of the best fee deals in clothing resale.
  • Men’s clothing. Several closet apps lean toward womenswear; eBay search does not.
  • Odd sizes and specialist items, where a buyer is hunting for one exact thing.

Items that sell mostly on looks, like trend pieces or unbranded vintage, often do better on marketplaces built around browsing.

Before you list

  1. Price from sold listings, not active ones. Asking prices are wishes. Our pricing guide walks through building a comparable set.
  2. Put the fee on the full order total. Add shipping and a tax allowance before you work out the fee.
  3. Weigh the packed parcel before you set shipping. An underquoted label comes straight out of the margin.

The profit calculator does this arithmetic for you. Thrift Snap goes a step further in-store: photograph a find and it pulls real eBay sold comparables and subtracts the fees before you decide to buy.
